Because the district court is a court of record, papers received must be carefully preserved for future reference (in case of an appeal) or as a historical record of events as well as the basis for changes in property or liberty rights. Douglas County district court records are subject to the provisions of the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA), K.S.A. 45-215 et seq. Frequently asked questions about KORA may be found at the Kansas Attorney General's website at: http://ag.ks.gov/legal-services/open-govt

The repository for district court records is a part of the Office of the Clerk of the District Court, located in the lower level of the Law Enforcement and Judicial Center, 111 E. 11th St., Lawrence, KS 66044. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The official custodian of district court records is Douglas A. Hamilton, Clerk of the District Court. The deputy custodian is Amber Ballard. Both may be reached through the Clerk's office.

For your convenience, a records request form is available for you to fill out and submit online, or you may download it and fill it out offline at your convenience. Please remember that, although we respond to requests as quickly as possible, KORA allows public agencies three (3) business days to respond to a request.
